چکیده

Plasticity in magnesium crystals oriented for c-axis compression has been usually attributed to 〈cþa〉 dislocation slip on second-order pyramidal {112̄2} planes. Through molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the formation and slip characteristics of 〈cþa〉 dislocations on second-order pyramidal planes. It is shown that the critical c-axis compressive stress for these dislocations is almost seven times that for 〈cþa〉 dislocations on first-order pyramidal {101̄1} planes. In particular, it is concluded that firstorder pyramidal near-screw 〈cþa〉 dislocations play a predominant role during the c-axis compression of magnesium crystals. Careful reexaminations of published experimental observations show good agreements with the current predictions. & 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hot Deformation Mechanisms in AZ31 Magnesium Alloy Extruded at Different Temperatures: Impact of Texture

The hot deformation characteristics of AZ31 magnesium alloy rod extruded at temperatures of 300 °C, 350 °C and 450 °C have been studied in compression. The extruded material had a fiber texture with > < 0 1 10 parallel to the extrusion axis. When extruded at 450 °C, the texture was less intense and the > < 0 1 10 direction moved away from the extrusion axis. The processing maps for the material...

Evolution of texture in an ultrafine and nano grained magnesium alloy

The evolution of texture was discussed during the formation of ultra-fine and nano grains in a magnesium alloy severely deformed through accumulative back extrusion (ABE). The microstructure and texture obtained after applying multiple deformation passes at temperatures of 100 and 250°C were characterized. The results showed that after single ABE pass at 100°C an ultrafine/nano grained microstr...

Contribution of van der Waals forces to the plasticity of magnesium

The accurate determination of stacking fault energies (SFE) and associated restoring forces is important for understanding plastic deformation, especially the dislocation emission and motion in metals. In this work, we use density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to, systematically study the all-dimension relaxed atomic models of Mg crystal slip, with a special focus on the “subslip modes” ...

A Taylor Model Based Description of the Proof Stress of Magnesium AZ31 during Hot Working

A series of hot-compression tests and Taylor-model simulations were carried out with the intention of developing a simple expression for the proof stress of magnesium alloy AZ31 during hot working. A crude approximation of wrought textures as a mixture of a single ideal texture component and a random background was employed. The shears carried by each deformation system were calculated using a ...

Modeling Slip System Strength Evolution in Ti-7al Informed by In-situ Grain Stress Measurements (postprint)

Far-field high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy is used to asses the evolution of slip system strengths in hexagonal close-packed (HCP) Ti-7Al during tensile deformation in-situ. The following HCP slip system families are considered: basal 〈a〉, prismatic 〈a〉, pyramidal 〈a〉, and first-order pyramidal 〈cþ a〉. A 1 mm length of the specimen's gauge section, marked with fiducials and comprised of...
